Three separate incidents across Kano State have left multiple people dead, prompting the state’s fire service to issue a stark warning against entering wells or taking unnecessary risks during emergencies.
The first tragedy took place at Badawa Layin Day by Day in Nassarawa Local Government Area, where a house measuring 25 by 20 feet was engulfed in flames shortly before noon. Firefighters arrived to find two bedrooms severely damaged and a 10-year-old girl trapped inside. She was pulled out unconscious but later died and was handed over to her parents.
A second and more devastating incident occurred in Badume Kanawa Village of Bichi Local Government Area, where three men lost their lives inside a well. According to the fire service, 65-year-old Sa’idu Gada was working inside the well when the rope supporting him snapped, sending him crashing to the bottom.
His 20-year-old son, Sani Isyaku, attempted to save him but became trapped himself. A third man, 60-year-old Yakubu Abdullahi, also entered the well to assist but met the same fate. All three were pulled out unconscious by firefighters and later confirmed dead. The bodies were handed over to police officers at the Badume Division.
Later in the evening, another 10-year-old boy, Hassan Iliyasu Haruna, died after falling into a well in Danbatta Local Government Area. Emergency responders from the Danbatta station rescued him around 6:02 pm, but he too was declared dead shortly afterwards. His remains were released to his father.
Following the string of fatal events, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to resist the instinct to dive into wells or dangerous spaces during emergencies. He stressed that such actions often result in multiple avoidable deaths.
“People should stop entering wells to rescue others. This behaviour is dangerous and leads to unnecessary loss of lives,” he warned, calling on the public to contact trained emergency teams instead of taking perilous risks.
