Nigerian Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has revealed that her leaked sex tape, which went viral in 2021, was not an accident but the result of a bet made by her then boyfriend.
Speaking during a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, the singer described the incident as one of the most painful betrayals of her life.
Savage explained that the video was initially recorded by her partner without her knowledge. At the time, reports suggested it had been released by a blackmailer after she refused to pay hush money. However, the 44-year-old has now disclosed that the clip was deliberately circulated by her boyfriend himself.
“I actually did that with my boyfriend. He said he accidentally pressed ‘send’ when he was trying to save it. But I later found out that it was a bet with his friends,” Savage revealed.
The singer described the experience as devastating, noting that the betrayal went beyond the act of recording. “I was betrayed,” she added, stressing that it was not only an invasion of privacy but also a calculated move to humiliate her.
The leak in 2021 sparked a national conversation around privacy, gendered double standards, and cyber exploitation in Nigeria. Many fans rallied around Savage at the time, hailing her courage for addressing the scandal publicly rather than hiding from it.
Four years later, her fresh revelations shed new light on the scandal, underlining the toxic circumstances behind one of the most high-profile celebrity controversies in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
