Owerri, the Imo State capital, has been transformed ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s official visit on Tuesday, 30 September, where he is scheduled to commission a series of infrastructure projects completed under Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration.

Among the projects listed for unveiling are the fully rebuilt Owerri–Mbaise–Obowo–Umuahia Road, a new flyover linking Port Harcourt and Onitsha Roads, major upgrades around the Assumpta Cathedral Roundabout, and the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre.

The President is also expected to launch Governor Uzodimma’s new book, A Decade of Impactful Progressive Governance in Nigeria, reflecting on ten years of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in power.

City wears new look

Across Owerri, political banners, posters and billboards featuring Mr Tinubu’s portrait have been mounted by government officials, political groups, and individuals. Some of them bear messages of support for his anticipated 2027 re-election bid.

Members of the Imo State House of Assembly also joined in, erecting welcome billboards that featured their images alongside the president’s.

Residents spoken to by reporters expressed excitement. Geoffrey Nwosu described the visit as “a big moment for Imo,” while another, Chimuanya Ihedinoha, said: “It is an honour that the highest leader in Nigeria is visiting our state.”

Tight security ahead of visit

Security presence in Owerri has been visibly heightened. Personnel of the Nigerian Army and police have been stationed at strategic points across the city.

Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed that security operatives had been deployed to all entry and exit routes, the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, and designated venues of the presidential engagements.

“The deployment is water-tight to ensure a hitch-free event,” Okoye said. “Anyone caught trying to undermine the security architecture of the state will be arrested and prosecuted.”

Imo Police Commissioner Aboki Danjuma further appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities as the president’s convoy moves through the capital.
