Oluwatosin Demehin, the rock-solid Super Falcons defender who helped secure Nigeria’s 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, has been honoured with a prestigious chieftaincy title in Ondo State. Her Royal Majesty, Oba Kayode Aiyetiwa, the Oba of Bariga, bestowed on her the title “Yeye Akeweje Ilaje” during a ceremony that drew a jubilant crowd in Ilaje Local Government Area.
At just 23, Demehin has carved her name into both sporting history and community leadership, earning praise not only for her defensive prowess on the pitch but also for her unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and mentorship in her hometown. The chieftaincy title, which translates to “Mother of Youth Guidance,” reflects her growing influence beyond football.
The Galatasaray centre-back played a crucial role in Nigeria’s unbeaten run at the 2024 WAFCON, featuring in all six matches and helping the team lift their 12th continental crown. Her performances were widely lauded, and she’s fast becoming a symbol of pride and excellence for Ondo State’s next generation.
Earlier this week, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa rewarded Demehin with ₦30 million and a house, recognizing her WAFCON heroics and her inspirational role in promoting sports and positive values among young girls in the state. The Governor’s gesture sparked celebrations across Ondo, reinforcing the importance of investing in female athletes.
Oba Aiyetiwa, during the conferment ceremony, described Demehin as a “national treasure and a pride of Ilaje land,” emphasizing that traditional institutions must begin to spotlight modern heroines who are shaping the future through excellence and integrity.
The title positions Demehin as a rising force in both sport and societal leadership. Local groups and youth organizations have already signaled intentions to partner with her on outreach and football development programs in Ilaje and neighbouring communities.
As she returns to Turkey for the new season with Galatasaray, Demehin carries not just the hopes of football fans, but the blessings of her people and a title that cements her legacy both on and off the field.
