Former Manchester United legend Gary Neville has tipped Arsenal to silence Anfield and snatch a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in this weekend’s blockbuster Premier League clash.
The two giants, both sitting at the top of the table with six points each after two games, will lock horns on Sunday, August 31, 2025, in what already feels like a title-defining showdown. While Arsenal have kept clean sheets in their opening fixtures, Liverpool’s defence has been far shakier, conceding four goals against Bournemouth and Newcastle.
Speaking on his show The Overlap, Neville explained why he believes Mikel Arteta’s side have the edge. “I fancy Arsenal to win. They’ll score two from set-pieces – it will be land of the giants with Arsenal on Sunday,” he declared. Neville predicted Liverpool would score one, but Arsenal’s aerial power would ultimately prove decisive.
The former England defender highlighted Arsenal’s midfield balance and physical presence as key factors. “He’ll go with [Mikel] Merino, [Declan] Rice, [Martin] Zubimendi, then [Eberechi] Eze or [Leandro] Trossard. With that big back four and strength in the box, they’ll be hard to contain,” Neville added.
The clash is particularly crucial for Jurgen Klopp’s men, who have struggled defensively despite their attacking flair. Anfield’s aura has often rescued Liverpool in big games, but Arsenal’s form and discipline under Arteta has made them one of the league’s most feared away sides.
This will also be a tactical chess match: Arsenal hunting a third straight league win without conceding, and Liverpool desperate to prove their defensive fragility is not a lingering weakness. The head-to-head record favours Liverpool at Anfield, but recent performances suggest Arsenal are closing the gap.
For Neville, the margins are thin, but he believes Arsenal’s set-piece strength and tactical organisation will tilt the scales. “It’s going to be tight, but I see Arsenal nicking it 2-1. They look like a team ready to bully opponents in key moments,” he concluded.
