The Abia State Government has issued a strong advisory to all intending Christian and Muslim pilgrims from the state, warning them against any form of misconduct while in the Holy Land. The caution comes ahead of upcoming pilgrimage trips to Israel, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia scheduled for later this year.
The Executive Secretary of the Abia State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mrs. Ngozi Okoronkwo, gave the warning during a pre-departure orientation held in Umuahia. She stressed that any form of indiscipline, trafficking, absconding, or criminal activity during the pilgrimage would not only tarnish the image of the state but also attract severe consequences for the individuals involved.
According to Okoronkwo, all pilgrims must see the journey as a spiritual mission and not a tourist getaway. “The government is committed to supporting you on this sacred journey, but we will not tolerate any act that disrespects our state, our country, or the host nations,” she said.
Security and immigration authorities from both Nigeria and the host countries have been briefed to maintain strict surveillance during the religious trips. In past years, incidents of absconding pilgrims have led to diplomatic concerns and stricter visa regulations for Nigerians.
She also reminded pilgrims that Abia State will blacklist anyone found guilty of violating pilgrimage codes, and such individuals may be barred from participating in any state-sponsored religious trips in the future.
Religious leaders present at the briefing echoed the government’s stance, urging pilgrims to reflect deeply on their spiritual responsibilities and behave in a manner befitting ambassadors of their faith and homeland.
As final preparations are underway, the government emphasized that the purpose of the pilgrimage must remain spiritual renewal, not personal indulgence or illegal migration attempts.
