The crescent moon signaling the end of Ramadan was not sighted anywhere in Nigeria on Sunday, March 30, 2025, meaning the fasting period will extend by one more day, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has announced.
The official statement from the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) confirmed that reports from various moon sighting committees across the country indicated no visibility of the new moon. As a result, Nigerian Muslims will observe the 30th day of Ramadan on Monday, March 31, 2025, and prepare for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
The Sultan, who serves as the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims, urged the faithful to remain steadfast in prayers, charity, and good deeds as the holy month concludes. He also reiterated the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.
Muslim communities across the country had eagerly awaited the moon sighting, a crucial Islamic tradition that determines the end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid. However, Islamic teachings dictate that when the moon is not visible, fasting must be completed for 30 days.
Preparations for Eid celebrations have intensified, with various state governments announcing public holidays and security agencies heightening measures to ensure a peaceful festivity.
