The Nigerian Army has announced the funeral arrangements for its late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56. His burial rites will commence with a service of songs on Thursday at the Army Headquarters’ Garrison Parade Ground, Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja, followed by a funeral service on Friday at the National Christian Centre, also in Abuja.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s death marks a somber moment in the history of Nigeria’s military leadership. This is the second time in three years that a sitting Chief of Army Staff has died while in office, following Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru’s tragic passing in 2021. Lagbaja had served with distinction as the Chief of Army Staff for one year and four months, having been appointed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023.

According to President Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Lagbaja passed away in Lagos following a brief illness. Born on February 28, 1968, he dedicated 32 years of his life to service in the Nigerian Army, beginning with his commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in 1992. Lagbaja was a highly respected officer, known for his contributions to multiple internal security operations, including Operations ZAKI, Lafiya Dole, Udoka, and Forest Sanity, which provided critical security in volatile regions of Nigeria.
