The Imo State Government has entered into a landmark partnership with the Hilton Group to manage the iconic Concorde Hotel, Owerri, following its complete renovation and upgrade to international standards. The deal, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in Owerri on Friday, marks a major step in boosting the state’s hospitality and tourism sectors.

The MOU was signed by Governor Hope Uzodimma on behalf of the state, with Hilton Group Senior Director for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, Ms. Nida Sozugecer, representing the global hospitality giant. The signing ceremony, held at the Governor’s Conference Room, was witnessed by top government officials, including Deputy Governor Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, Chief Cosmas Iwu (Secretary to the Government), and Commissioner for Tourism Barr. Jerry Egemba, among others.

Governor Uzodimma disclosed that the Concorde Hotel’s revamp, estimated at ₦19 billion, is on track for completion within nine months, ahead of the initial 12-month projection. He revealed that 30% of the project cost has been paid, with another 30% scheduled for release next week.

“This partnership with Hilton Group is a testament to our commitment to revitalizing Imo State’s economy. The presence of Hilton and Marriott will elevate our hospitality standards, attract business, and create job opportunities,” Uzodimma said. He lamented the hotel’s prior neglect by previous administrations and expressed pride in taking responsibility for its transformation.

Ms. Sozugecer lauded the Imo State Government’s vision, expressing excitement about Hilton’s entry into the region. “We are thrilled to bring the Hilton brand to Owerri and explore the immense business opportunities in this vibrant state,” she remarked.

The Concorde Hotel, built in 1979, is undergoing a complete overhaul led by Roycon Engineering. Once completed, it is expected to fill the void of globally recognized hotels in the region, addressing a long-standing challenge for businesses, particularly oil companies operating in Imo and neighboring states.

Governor Uzodimma expressed confidence that this collaboration would position Imo as a top destination for tourism and business in Nigeria, setting the pace for future investments in the state.
