A Kano State-based businessman, Jamilu Sule, has been convicted and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment with no option of fine following a petition written against him for obtaining goods valued at N7, 677,000 under false pretences.
Sule was arraigned by the Kano Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday before Justice Dije Aboki of the Kano State High Court on one count of obtaining under false pretences.
The commission’s spokesman, Tony Orilade, in a statement, said Sule was accused of collecting goods valued at N7,677,000 on credit under the guise that he would supply same to supermarkets.
“The commission’s investigations revealed that the defendant was in the habit of collecting goods, pretending that he would supply same to supermarkets, but instead, he would the goods for his personal use,” the statement said.
The EFCC disclosed that it charged the accused before Justice Aboki on four counts of obtaining goods by false pretences.
Sule was first arraigned on May 21, 2019, when he pleaded not guilty.
During the trial, the prosecution counsel, Michael Ojo, called four witnesses and closed his case, while the defendant opted for a no-case submission, which was rejected by the court.
