The National leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has described the purported constitution of a caretaker committee to run the affairs of Imo State Council of NUJ as fake, misleading and mischievous.

National Trustee of NUJ Zone C South East, Sir Innocent Igwe disclosed this in a release he issued on Thursday.

The release read:
“The Attention of the National Trustee of the Nigeria union of Journalists NUJ Zone C South East has been drawn to a fake, misleading and mischievous information in some platforms on the purported Constitution of a Caretaker Committee to run the Affairs of the Imo State Council of NUJ.”

“This information is at best a figment of the imagination of the perpetrators to grossly mislead and confuse the general public with the intention to complicate the true situation of things in the Union and should be disregarded by all.”

“The Nigeria union of Journalists NUJ is a highly structured Industrial and Professional Union copiously guided by the provisions of it’s constitution which is strictly followed in the conduct of each and every activity of the union.”

“The NUJ constitution is appropriately reviewed every five years or at most every ten years inline with the trending needs of the Profession. Article Six(1-9) clearly stipulates the procedure for Elections and the Setting up of a Caretaker Committee when necessary at any level of the Union and more importantly identifies whose responsibility it is to carry out those crucial assignments to check abusive tendencies.”

“Imo State Council of NUJ has a substantive State Executive which was duely elected inline with the Constitution on Wednesday March 6,2019 with Chief Chris Akaraonye as Chairman and the Exco was sworn in by the NUJ Assistant National Secretary who conducted the Election.”

“The Union is aware that the Election is being challenged at the National Industrial Court Owerri Division and in the Spirit of democracy the union has allowed those dissatisfied with the Election to pursue their court matter till the end but will not tolerate the use of brigandage and self-help to seek redress when the civil judicial procedure and the Union’s Appealate mechanism have not been exhausted.”

“The General public is therefore advised to ignore any information that suggests the setting up of a Caretaker Committee for the Imo State Council of the NUJ. The Security Agencies should take note of this clarification and act accordingly.”
