Police Arrest 45-Year-Old Man for Alleged Fake Medical Practice in Ibadan

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Adeniyi Benjamin, for allegedly operating an unlicensed medical facility and treating patients without the qualifications required to practise medicine in Ibadan.

Benjamin was arrested on October 2 at Life Is Good Hospital in the Olodo area of the city. According to the police, operatives of the command’s Monitoring Unit carried out the arrest following intelligence about his activities.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed the arrest in a statement, alleging that the suspect was attending to patients and administering treatments despite not being a qualified medical doctor.

Police said the facility was particularly involved in fertility-related treatments. Items recovered during the operation included two weighing scales, four Quantum Magnetic Resonance Body Analysers, a stethoscope, a carton of assorted medicines and specimen bottles.

According to the statement, Benjamin allegedly admitted during preliminary investigations that he had been practising as an unqualified medical practitioner for about seven years. He reportedly acknowledged that he was not a medical doctor and did not have a licence to practise medicine.

The police added that the suspect said he specialised in fertility-related treatment, which he had been administering to patients at the facility. The allegations have raised concerns about the risks people may face when seeking medical care from practitioners whose qualifications and professional registration have not been verified.

The command urged residents to confirm the credentials and registration status of healthcare providers before seeking treatment. It also encouraged the public to report suspicious medical facilities or individuals claiming to be medical practitioners without verifiable qualifications to the police or relevant regulatory authorities.

Olayinka said investigations were continuing to establish the full extent of the suspect’s activities and determine whether other individuals were involved in operating the facility. The police added that appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law.
