The Oyo State Police Command has explained why officers from Kwara State attempted to arrest Isese adherent Abdulazeez Adegbola, popularly known as Tani Olohun, in Ibadan on Tuesday.
The command said the officers were acting on a warrant issued by the Upper Ilorin Magistrates’ Court in connection with allegations of conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace. The explanation followed an incident in which residents reportedly resisted the arrest.
Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the warrant was issued after Tani Olohun allegedly failed to comply with conditions attached to an earlier bail granted to him. The court subsequently ordered his arrest, the police said.
Footage circulating online showed men identified as police officers attempting to take Tani Olohun away while residents confronted them. One of the officers was also seen displaying his identity card as people questioned the operation.
The attempted arrest was reportedly halted after Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, intervened alongside residents. The incident drew attention after videos of the confrontation spread on social media.
Following the report, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police directed the Kwara officers to return to their base. The complainant was also advised to approach the appropriate court in Ibadan, since the alleged offence was said to have occurred there.
The Oyo Command said the directive was based on due process and the principle of territorial jurisdiction. It urged residents to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions, stressing that the police remained committed to handling complaints within the law.
“The Command wishes to clarify that the officers were acting pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by the Upper Ilorin Magistrates’ Court, Ilorin,” the statement said.
The command added that it would continue to protect lives and property while ensuring that complaints are handled professionally and in accordance with existing laws.
