Imo Police Arrest Two Suspects Over Murder of Inspector at Commissioner’s Residence

The Imo State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of Police Inspector Henry Effiong, who was attached as a security aide to the state Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Rex Anunobi.

Effiong was found dead at the commissioner’s residence in New Owerri on Monday, September 14, 2026. The police have since transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, identified the arrested suspects as Olivia Patrick, 31, and ThankGod Mourice, 25. Police said both were arrested at the scene shortly after the incident was reported.

Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso has directed investigators to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify everyone found to have played a role. The command said efforts are also ongoing to apprehend other suspects allegedly still at large.

Police investigators, led by the Deputy Commissioner in charge of the SCID and the Divisional Police Officer of the New Owerri Division, visited the scene. Necessary examinations were conducted and relevant exhibits were recovered and secured as part of the investigation.

Reports from sources cited by local media alleged that Effiong’s service rifle was taken during the incident. The police have not publicly confirmed all details surrounding the manner of the killing, and investigations are ongoing.

Bosso described the incident as a painful reminder of the risks faced by police officers in the course of their duties. He condoled with Effiong’s family and assured them that the command would pursue the investigation and seek justice in accordance with the law.

The police said the remains of the deceased officer have been deposited at a mortuary, while the investigation continues. The command has also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist investigators.

The development comes ahead of a major Nigeria Police Force conference scheduled to take place in Owerri from September 21 to 23, where senior police officers are expected to discuss security management and policing strategies.
