Aisha Buhari Visits Atiku in Abuja as 2027 Political Activities Intensify

Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has visited former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja, with the meeting drawing attention amid increasing political activity ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Atiku, who is the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, disclosed the visit on Wednesday.

Atiku described the encounter with Aisha, the widow of former President Muhammadu Buhari, as “warm and deeply appreciated.” Neither Aisha nor Atiku publicly disclosed the specific purpose of the meeting or details of their discussions.

In his account of the meeting, Atiku said the visit served as a reminder of the responsibility facing those seeking to lead Nigeria, particularly the need to place the welfare and dignity of citizens at the centre of public affairs.

The former vice-president also highlighted the economic pressures facing Nigerian households, pointing to the rising cost of food, transportation, education, healthcare and other essential services.

Atiku said Nigerians needed an economy that creates opportunities and rewards hard work, while allowing families to live with dignity and hope. He linked the message to his stated objective of easing economic pressure on households and restoring confidence in the country’s future.

The meeting comes as political parties and potential contenders continue preparations for the 2027 elections. Atiku has been active in the opposition political space as the ADC’s presidential candidate, while discussions among opposition parties over cooperation ahead of the election have also continued in recent weeks.

Aisha was accompanied by one of her daughters and some associates during the Abuja visit. The former First Lady has previously met Atiku, including a meeting in Saudi Arabia earlier in 2026, although that encounter was described as a private meeting involving their families.

For now, there is no public indication from either side that the latest meeting produced a political agreement or formal announcement. Its significance will likely remain a subject of public discussion as the 2027 political season develops.
