Imo LG Elections Set for September 26 as ISIEC Announces Polls Across 27 Councils

Imo State will hold its long-awaited local government elections on Saturday, September 26, 2026, with voters expected to elect chairmen and councillors across the state’s 27 local government areas.

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) announced the date in a statement issued on September 11 by its chairman, Chief Charles Ejiogu. The commission said the notice was directed at registered political parties and the general public ahead of the exercise.

According to ISIEC, elections will be conducted for 27 local government council chairmanship positions and 305 ward councillorship seats. Voting will take place across 4,758 polling units throughout Imo State.

The commission urged all registered political parties to take note of the election date and complete the necessary preparations. It said the announcement follows the 360-day notice of election issued on September 18, 2025, in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.

ISIEC said consultations with key stakeholders are still ongoing as preparations for the elections continue. The commission did not provide further details in the statement on the candidates, accreditation arrangements or the specific timetable for other stages of the electoral process.

The September 26 poll will be the first major statewide local government election in Imo in the current electoral cycle and will determine who occupies the chairmanship positions across the state’s 27 councils.

Political parties and their candidates will now have to intensify their preparations ahead of the election, while voters are expected to follow announcements from ISIEC regarding polling arrangements and other election-related procedures.

The commission’s announcement also puts the focus on the conduct of the exercise across the 4,758 polling units and the ability of political parties, election officials and security agencies to ensure an orderly process on election day.
