Ronald Koeman’s Wife Bartina Dies at 65 After Cancer Battle

Ronald Koeman’s wife, Bartina Koeman, has died aged 65 after a long battle with cancer, with the former Netherlands and Barcelona manager announcing her death on Wednesday.

Bartina, who had been married to Koeman for decades, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. She underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and later said the disease had gone, but she revealed in 2024 that the cancer had returned.

Koeman announced her death in a statement shared on Wednesday. He described Bartina as his “beautiful wife” and their “dearest mom and grandma”, adding that the family was saying goodbye with “intense sadness” as well as pride and love.

The couple had three children together — sons Tim and Ronald Jr and daughter Debbie. Bartina remained supportive of Koeman’s football career even as she underwent treatment for cancer.

She publicly revealed that the disease had returned shortly before Koeman led the Netherlands at Euro 2024. Despite her health battle, she encouraged him to travel with the national team and expressed hope that he would enjoy a successful tournament.

Bartina had previously explained that her cancer journey had included treatment for a metastasis in her spine after she initially believed discomfort in her neck was caused by whiplash. She later underwent further chemotherapy and continued receiving regular treatment in the Netherlands.

Tributes followed the announcement, including from Barcelona, where Koeman played and later managed. The club expressed its condolences to Koeman and his family and said its supporters shared their affection with them during the difficult period.

The Netherlands national team also paid tribute to Bartina, offering strength and support to Koeman, their children, grandchildren and wider family. Koeman, who remains one of Dutch football’s most prominent figures, is now mourning the loss of his wife after her lengthy illness.
