Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has appointed Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo as the new Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), following the completion of Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello’s five-year tenure.
The appointment was announced on Wednesday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso. Badejo, a professor of Guidance and Counselling, will take over leadership of the university as the institution begins a new administration.
Badejo was born on August 4, 1962, and earned both a Master of Education and a PhD in Guidance and Counselling from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Her appointment comes after Olatunji-Bello completed her five-year term as Vice-Chancellor. Olatunji-Bello assumed office in September 2021 and recently stepped down after highlighting the achievements recorded under her administration.
During her tenure, LASU recorded a 96 per cent success rate in its first-year accreditation exercise, with 31 of the 37 programmes presented securing full accreditation.
Olatunji-Bello also disclosed that the university’s internally generated revenue rose from ₦3 billion to ₦13 billion during her tenure. She described the period as one that strengthened LASU’s position in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
The outgoing Vice-Chancellor said LASU had become “the most subscribed university in Nigeria and the most digitally advanced among our peers”, adding that she was leaving behind “a university of proven excellence”.
Badejo now inherits an institution with a growing student population and a strong focus on academic quality, digital development and financial sustainability. Her appointment is expected to usher in a new phase of leadership at one of Lagos State’s leading universities.
