A branch manager of Polaris Bank identified as Mr Ossy was killed during an attack at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo State, on Sunday, while two female students were reportedly abducted.
The banker, who was based in Owerri, was reportedly taking his children to the university when he was accosted by suspected kidnappers within the campus.
Sources said the manager resisted the attackers, who allegedly shot him before fleeing the scene with the two students.
Polaris Bank confirmed the death, saying the manager had been attacked while taking his children to the university. The bank said his children managed to escape, but he was not as fortunate.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of our Branch Manager and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the bank said in a statement signed by its Head of Brand Management and Corporate Communication, Rasheed Bolarinwa.
FUTO also confirmed that a visitor was fatally shot on the university campus and that two female students were reportedly abducted during the incident.
The university said security agencies were investigating the incident and that management was working with authorities towards the safe recovery of the students.
The attack has heightened security concerns around FUTO and its host communities. The institution subsequently met with Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, who assured management that security operations would be intensified around the university and neighbouring areas, including Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze and Nekede.
FUTO management has also urged students and staff to remain calm and vigilant, while warning against unauthorised gatherings and activities that could further threaten security on campus. Police had yet to announce any arrest in connection with the killing and abduction at the time of filing.
