Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio has been convicted of drink-driving in Spain and handed an eight-month driving ban following an incident in Gran Canaria.
The 23-year-old centre-back was found to have been more than three times over the legal alcohol limit, according to reports. He was convicted at a trial in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, over an incident that occurred on August 16.
Asencio was not with Real Madrid’s first-team squad when the incident occurred because he was recovering from a hamstring injury sustained at the end of July. The defender is originally from the Canary Islands.
The conviction comes at a difficult period for Asencio, who has also been named in a separate legal case concerning the alleged non-consensual sharing of a private sexual video dating back to 2023.
Spanish media reports said that case is expected to continue in Gran Canaria this week, with proceedings scheduled for September 3, 4 and 7.
Asencio is not the only person facing proceedings in the separate case. Three former Real Madrid reserve players are also on trial over allegations connected to the recording and distribution of the video.
Reports from Spain have suggested that Asencio expects to be cleared in the separate case if the two women involved formally forgive him. The allegation remains a matter for the court to determine.
For now, the drink-driving case has resulted in a confirmed conviction and an eight-month driving ban, while the separate 2023 case remains ongoing as the Spanish courts consider the allegations.
