Borno Commissioner Sainna Buba Threatens Opposition With Violence, Government Sanctions

Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, has come under fire after warning political opponents that they could face physical retaliation and exclusion from government benefits if they refuse to support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Buba made the remarks at a campaign inauguration organised by the Tinubu City Boy Movement, a political support group backing President Bola Tinubu’s administration and his expected bid for a second term in 2027.

While addressing supporters at the event, the commissioner used violent language to warn critics and opposition figures against challenging his political camp. “Whoever shows us a finger, we are ready to cut off his fingers,” Buba said.

He repeated the warning, adding: “We are now playing politics. Whoever shows us a finger, we will show him a finger… Whoever dares to show us a finger again, we will break his finger.” The comments have triggered concern over the language being used by a serving government official ahead of the 2027 elections.

Buba also appeared to link access to government benefits with political loyalty. “The government is our government. Those who follow us will enjoy the honey; if you refuse, then you will be flogged,” he said.

The remarks have raised questions about political tolerance and the treatment of opposition supporters in Borno State. Critics argue that threats from public officials can deepen political tensions and create fear around the exercise of political rights in a multi-party democracy.

Buba had not publicly clarified whether his statements were intended literally or as aggressive political rhetoric at the time of reporting. The Borno State Government had also not issued an official response to the commissioner’s comments.

The controversy comes five days after Danjuma Shekwolo, Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, reportedly told residents to either support the APC in the 2027 election or leave the council area. The two incidents have added to growing concerns about the tone of political mobilisation ahead of the next general elections.
