A technical staff member of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) is receiving medical treatment after suffering an electric shock while carrying out maintenance work on an 11kV power feeder in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
BEDC confirmed that the incident occurred at about 6:20 p.m. on Saturday in the Ado-Poly Satellite Campus area, where the employee was working on the 11kV Basiri Feeder following scheduled maintenance operations.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the company’s Head of Branding and Corporate Communications, Mrs. Evelyn Gbiwen, identified the injured worker as Mr. Akinyemi Bamidele, a technical linesman.
According to the company, Bamidele sustained burns to his arm and other parts of his body after receiving an electric shock while performing an operational task on the feeder.
He was immediately rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado-Ekiti, where he is currently receiving treatment. BEDC said the employee is in stable condition and responding positively to medical care.
The electricity distribution company reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of its workforce, stating that it is providing the necessary support to the injured staff member throughout his recovery.
BEDC also announced that it has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The company said appropriate actions would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The incident highlights the occupational risks faced by electricity workers and underscores the importance of strict adherence to safety procedures during power infrastructure maintenance.
