Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has publicly criticised the National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, urging party leaders to focus on the 2027 general election rather than internal disputes.

Yesufu made her position known in a post on her verified X account on Thursday, reacting to Dickson’s recent television interview in which he defended the NDC leadership and responded to criticism from some supporters of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The activist argued that Dickson appeared to be engaging in an unnecessary contest with Obi, despite there being no challenge to his position as leader of the party.

“You seem to be in a competition with the NDC presidential candidate. No one is challenging your leadership of the party,” Yesufu wrote.

Her comments followed Dickson’s appearance on a national television programme, where he dismissed claims of a crisis within the NDC and insisted that the party was providing a platform for its presidential candidate rather than benefiting from him.

During the interview, Dickson defended the sacrifices made by the party’s founding members, stating that those who joined the platform later should acknowledge the efforts invested in building the organisation before their arrival.

However, Yesufu urged party leaders to prioritise broader political goals and the challenges facing the country rather than becoming distracted by internal disagreements and public exchanges.

“The focus should be on securing victory in the 2027 elections and addressing Nigeria’s challenges,” she said.

She further stressed that the task of rebuilding the country should take precedence over personal interests or political rivalries.

“There is a whole battle ahead of us. Rescuing Nigeria from the current state it is in should be the main focus, not people’s fragile ego!” she added.

The exchange comes amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties and political figures increasingly positioning themselves for what is expected to be a highly contested race.

Peter Obi remains one of the country’s most influential opposition figures, while supporters continue to closely monitor developments within the NDC and its leadership structure.

Neither Dickson nor the NDC leadership had publicly responded to Yesufu’s comments as of the time of filing this report.
