Former England international Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving following a crash involving his Lamborghini on the M3 motorway in Hampshire.
The 31-year-old footballer, who recently played for Dutch side Feyenoord, was reportedly involved in a single-vehicle collision on Thursday morning when his car struck motorway barriers near the Minley Interchange.
Hampshire Police confirmed that officers received reports of the incident shortly before 9 a.m. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no injuries were recorded.
In a statement, police said the driver, identified only as a 31-year-old man from Berkshire, was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C drug, and failing to provide a specimen.
The force added that the suspect has since been released on bail while investigations continue.
A source close to Sterling acknowledged the arrest but insisted there was currently “no proof” that the former winger had drugs in his system. The source also claimed the player had endured a difficult period in recent years and had been made to feel “worthless” and “forgotten about.”
Sterling’s latest setback comes after a turbulent spell in his club career. The former Liverpool and Manchester City star joined Feyenoord in February after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent. His stay in the Netherlands was short-lived, with only eight appearances before the end of the season.
Once one of England’s most influential attacking players, Sterling won four Premier League titles during his successful spell with Manchester City and earned 82 caps for England National Football Team. His last international appearance came at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the investigation, and no formal charges have been announced.
