As political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, concerns are emerging within the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State over the credibility of its candidate selection process, particularly in the Nsukka zone.

A group known as Concerned Citizens of Nsukka has called on the party leadership to ensure transparency, fairness, and thorough vetting of aspirants seeking elective positions under the NDC platform.

In a statement signed by Kenneth Ugwuanyi, the group expressed concern about what it described as the growing influence of individuals whose political activities may not align with the ideals and objectives of the party.

Central to the concerns raised is Dr. Clinton Above Ishiwu, an aspirant for the House of Representatives seat representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency. The group referenced a widely circulated interview titled, “N4 Million for 4,000 Voices: Why I’m Betting Big on Peter Mbah’s Second Term,” in which Dr. Ishiwu reportedly discussed plans involving financial support for political mobilisation in support of Governor Peter Mbah’s second-term ambition.

According to the statement, the interview has generated debate among party members and political observers, with some questioning whether such public political alignments are consistent with the expectations of an aspirant seeking a ticket under a party that presents itself as an alternative political force in Enugu State.

The group also pointed to Dr. Ishiwu’s reported participation in activities associated with the PM4PM political movement and other events linked to the current administration, arguing that these developments deserve closer scrutiny by party stakeholders.

While expressing confidence in the democratic process, the concerned citizens urged the party to carefully examine the backgrounds, affiliations, and political commitments of all aspirants before granting tickets for the 2027 elections.

The statement also noted that several aspirants, have continued to build support across the constituency as party members evaluate who is best positioned to represent the NDC and connect with grassroots voters.

According to the group, the credibility of the party’s primaries will play a significant role in determining its strength and acceptability among voters ahead of the elections.

They warned that any perception of political infiltration, undue influence, or manipulation of party structures could undermine public confidence in the NDC’s promise of offering a credible alternative in the state.

“The future of Nsukka politics must be driven by the will of the people, transparency in the electoral process, and the emergence of candidates who genuinely represent the interests of the constituency,” the statement read.

The group therefore called on the NDC leadership to remain vigilant and ensure that only loyal, credible, and electable candidates emerge from its internal processes.
