The Labour Party (LP) 2023 Vice-Presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has urged former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, to return to the party if he fails to secure the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Baba-Ahmed made the appeal during an interview on Trust TV, saying he remains committed to working with Obi and is willing to help him secure the Labour Party ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“I have much respect for Peter Obi. If he doesn’t get the ADC ticket, he should come back to the Labour Party please. I will work for him and try to get him the ticket in the Labour Party,” Baba-Ahmed said, adding that he would also help mend relations between Obi and any individuals he may have fallen out with.
The comments come amid growing political manoeuvring within opposition parties as they prepare for the 2027 elections, with discussions ongoing about possible alliances and ticket arrangements.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, has called on the party to adopt a more strategic and united approach if it hopes to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during a television interview, Momodu stressed that winning an election requires more than popularity, urging opposition leaders to prioritise unity, experience, and careful political planning.
“What it takes to win an election is not just the crowd; it is not just the noise; it is not just your ideas; it is not how brilliant you are,” he said.
He described Tinubu as a formidable political force, warning that defeating him would require more than just enthusiasm or rhetoric.
“Tinubu is so formidable that you are not just going to produce a candidate who can take him out. It doesn’t work that way,” Momodu added.
The statements highlight the ongoing strategic positioning and internal discussions within Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
