Lagos State recorded 1,156 emergency incidents in 2025, claiming the lives of 173 people, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has revealed.

According to LASEMA, road crashes accounted for the largest share of incidents, with 394 cases reported last year. Tanker and truck-related accidents followed at 249, while fire outbreaks were responsible for 204 emergencies. Despite the fatalities, the total number of emergencies in 2025 declined compared to the previous year.

Monthly data showed February 2025 had the highest number of incidents with 122, followed closely by April with 121 and May with 119. Geographically, Alimosho Local Government Area recorded the most emergencies at 180, followed by Eti-Osa with 144, and Ikeja with 139.

At a staff retreat on Friday, LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu praised the agency’s workforce and reaffirmed its preparedness for 2026. He noted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had provided robust support to strengthen LASEMA’s disaster response capacity.

“Our chosen theme this year, ‘Building a Resilient and Efficient LASEMA: Strengthening Preparedness, Response and Recovery in Lagos State,’ reflects the critical role each staff member plays behind the scenes,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

He emphasised that while infrastructure and technology are vital, the true strength of the agency lies in the commitment, discipline, and professionalism of its personnel. Public cooperation remains crucial in preventing emergencies, he added, urging residents to adopt safe practices to protect lives and property.
