Former top Rivers official tells police he is out of town as investigators probe leaked call allegedly discussing plan to kill FCT minister.

A former Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Tammy Danagogo, has failed to honour a police invitation over allegations linking him to a plot to assassinate the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The Nigeria Police Force had summoned Danagogo to appear before the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja on Thursday, 15 January 2026. The invitation followed the circulation of a leaked telephone conversation allegedly involving Danagogo and a Port Harcourt-based cleric, Pastor Tambari Joseph Gbeneol.

In the recorded call, both men were alleged to have discussed plans to eliminate the former Rivers State governor, including claims that assassins would be brought in from Israel. The allegations have not been proven.

Danagogo, however, informed the police that he would be unable to attend the scheduled interview, citing his absence from town.

In a formal response sent through his legal representatives, Danagogo, Oputa & Co Associates, the former state official requested that the police reschedule the meeting to a later date.

The letter, dated Wednesday and addressed to the Commissioner of Police attached to the IRT in the Guzape District of the FCT, stated that Danagogo only became aware of the invitation after it was served on his lawyers around 6pm the previous day.

“Upon reaching our client, we regret to inform you that he is out of town and may not be available at your slated Thursday 15 January 2026 appointment,” the letter read.

The lawyers appealed for “kind indulgence” from the police, proposing Monday, 26 January 2026, as an alternative date for the interview.

Police sources say the invitation was issued to allow Danagogo respond to the allegations and clear his name amid growing public attention surrounding the leaked audio.

As of the time of publication, the Nigeria Police Force had not publicly confirmed whether the request for a new date would be granted, while Danagogo has not commented directly on the substance of the allegations.
