Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore narrowly escaped harm on Monday morning after security operatives fired live shots and tear gas to disperse protesters demanding the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, began peacefully near the Unity Fountain in Abuja before turning chaotic when a joint team of police and military officers stormed the area at about 7 a.m.
In a video circulating on social media, Sowore—seen sprinting away with other protesters—escaped the scene as gunshots rang out. Security personnel reportedly fired into the air and used tear gas canisters to scatter the crowd, which had planned to march toward Aso Rock Villa.
The demonstrators were calling for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who remains in detention amid ongoing legal battles.
Authorities had earlier warned organisers against holding any protest near the presidential villa, citing security concerns. Despite the warning, protesters gathered at the early hours of the morning before security forces moved in.
As of press time, there were no confirmed reports of casualties or arrests, though several demonstrators were seen fleeing the scene amid the commotion.
