Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has said former U.S. President Donald Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in brokering a landmark ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, ending the months-long conflict in Gaza.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Herzog praised Trump’s mediation efforts, describing the ceasefire as “a chance to mend, to heal, and to open a new horizon of hope for our region.”
“There is no doubt that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for this,” the Israeli leader wrote.
Trump had earlier announced that indirect negotiations in Egypt had produced a breakthrough agreement under a U.S.-led peace framework.
According to details of the first phase of the plan, all hostages held in Gaza are to be released, while Israeli forces will withdraw to an agreed line inside the enclave. The arrangement, which both sides confirmed, is expected to pave the way for a longer-term political settlement.
Hamas has also publicly confirmed its participation in the deal, marking a rare consensus between the warring parties under U.S. diplomatic oversight.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York earlier this month, Trump boasted that he had “already ended several wars” since taking office earlier in 2025, adding that such achievements should earn him the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is set to announce this year’s Peace Prize laureate on Friday, and speculation has intensified following the ceasefire breakthrough.
If confirmed, the deal would mark one of the most significant diplomatic milestones in the Middle East in recent years — and a major comeback moment for Trump’s global image.
