Panic gripped residents and traders at the Eke Ubaheze Market Square in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State on June 24, 2025, following a deadly explosion that claimed one life and left five others injured. The tragic incident, which occurred around 2:30 PM, was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) suspected to have been planted by members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN group.

The Imo State Police Command has since launched an intensive investigation to track down those behind the attack. Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Okoye Henry, revealed that the victim, identified as Ngozi Umeh, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, while five others are currently receiving treatment.

In a swift response, Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Tactical Teams, and officers from Orsu and Orlu Divisions to the scene. “Our operatives secured the area, evacuated victims, and conducted thorough sweeps to ensure no secondary devices were present,” the CP stated.
