Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has announced plans to commence the disbursement of gratuities to retired workers across the state, beginning this week.
The decision, disclosed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser, Oguwike Nwachuku, is in line with the state government’s commitment to honoring its obligations to retirees.
Governor Uzodimma revealed his intention to kick-start the payment of gratuities from Tuesday, April 30, 2024, coinciding with this year’s Workers Day on May 1, 2024. Speaking at a birthday luncheon for his Chief of Staff, Nnamdi Anyaehie, the Governor reiterated his dedication to leaving a lasting legacy, focusing on infrastructure development and revitalizing the civil service.
Acknowledging the financial preparations made for the gratuities disbursement, Governor Uzodimma affirmed that the state has set aside substantial funds, totaling up to N10 billion, in a dedicated account specifically earmarked for gratuity payments since 2020. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accuracy in disbursing the funds, ensuring that retirees receive their rightful entitlements based on verified employment records.
Furthermore, Governor Uzodimma expressed gratitude to the Organized Labour for their support and understanding, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of workers. The occasion also saw dignitaries including the Governor’s wife, Barr. (Mrs) Chioma Uzodimma, former Governor Ikedi Ohakim, members of the Imo State House of Assembly, and traditional rulers in attendance.
