Jigawa Man Arrested Over Alleged Petrol Attack That Killed Elder Brother

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Abbas Ibrahim, over the death of his elder brother, Basiru Shuaibu, following a fire incident in Gwaram Local Government Area.
The incident occurred at about 11:30pm on September 29, 2026, at Nassarawa village in Gwaram LGA, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam.
The police said Abbas allegedly entered his elder brother’s residence, poured petrol inside his room and set it ablaze. The suspect reportedly told investigators that he was of unsound mind.
The fire left Basiru and his wife with serious burns. Relatives subsequently took the victims to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment, but Basiru later died from injuries sustained in the incident.
Following the incident, police operatives launched an investigation and arrested Abbas in Sara town, Gwaram LGA.
The police said the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for further investigation. The suspect has since been arraigned in court for prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
He also advised residents to promptly report suspicious activities, threats and disputes to the police or other relevant security agencies to prevent incidents from escalating.
