Man City Could Still Play Champions League If Relegated Over Financial Breaches

Manchester City could face the unusual possibility of competing in next season’s Champions League even if the club is relegated from the Premier League over financial breaches, according to BBC Sport.
The concern centres on a scenario in which City win the Champions League this season. Such a victory would provide a route into the following season’s competition as defending champions, regardless of the club’s position in the English football pyramid.
BBC Sport reports that there is currently no automatic mechanism preventing a club from competing in a European competition if it qualifies through sporting performance. The situation could therefore create a complicated clash between Premier League sanctions and UEFA eligibility rules.
An independent commission recently found Manchester City guilty of all charges relating to the alleged inflation of sponsorship revenue by £830 million through sham contracts, as well as concealing another £90 million in expenses. The commission also found that without the alleged breaches, City would have failed the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules in nine seasons between 2009-10 and 2017-18.
Manchester City have denied wrongdoing and described the verdict as a “Premier League conspiracy”. The club has appealed the findings. If the appeal fails, possible sanctions could include a significant points deduction, a large fine, transfer restrictions or immediate expulsion from the Premier League.
One immediate question is whether City would receive the UEFA licence required to compete in European competitions. The licensing process is handled by the Football Association and delegated to the Premier League, with the criteria largely focused on a club’s current financial position rather than historical breaches or sanctions.
Even if a points deduction prevents City from qualifying for the Champions League through their Premier League position, winning the competition itself could potentially provide another route. Winning the FA Cup could also secure a Europa League place, while victory in the Carabao Cup would provide a route into the Conference League.
UEFA cannot take action while the Premier League disciplinary process remains ongoing, but its administration and Club Financial Control Body are expected to consider possible scenarios. The Premier League sanctioning hearing that will determine City’s punishment has not yet been scheduled, leaving the potential European consequences unresolved.
