Borno Court Jails Woman Two Years for Procuring 16-Year-Old Girl for Sexual Exploitation

A Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri has sentenced a 37-year-old woman, Fatima Sanda, to two years’ imprisonment for procuring a 16-year-old girl for sexual exploitation by other persons.

The conviction was secured by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on Monday, according to a report published on Wednesday. The court also ordered Sanda to pay N500,000 in compensation to the victim.

In a statement shared on its Facebook page, NAPTIP said the case was heard at Court 10 of the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri, presided over by Justice Aisha M. Ndume.

The agency said Sanda was convicted for procuring the minor and subjecting her to sexual exploitation by other people. The offence was prosecuted under Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, as amended.

The sentence includes two years in prison and the payment of N500,000 to the victim as compensation. NAPTIP described the conviction as part of its efforts to prosecute cases involving the exploitation of minors.

The Borno ruling comes about a month after another child sexual abuse case ended in a conviction in Niger State. A High Court sitting in Minna sentenced 27-year-old Hussaini Suleiman to seven years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to assaulting an eight-year-old girl at his residence behind the Prison Quarters in Minna.

According to NAPTIP, the Niger State case was referred to its state command by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on April 16, 2026, following a report of the rape of the minor. Suleiman was subsequently arraigned before Court 8 of the Niger State High Court on September 10, 2026, after admitting to the offence.
