NYSC May Suspend Corps Members’ Posting to Cross River Over Dilapidated Obubra Camp

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) may suspend the posting of corps members to Cross River State following concerns over the deteriorating condition of its permanent orientation camp in Obubra.

A source within the scheme disclosed that the proposed decision followed a recent inspection of the facility by the NYSC Director-General. The source spoke on condition of anonymity, citing a lack of authorisation to comment publicly on the matter.

According to the source, the Director-General expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the camp, describing its facilities as outdated and no longer suitable for hosting corps members under the scheme’s required standards.

The proposed suspension is expected to take effect after the ongoing 2026 Batch C, Stream One orientation exercise. If implemented, the measure would prevent corps members from being posted to Cross River for Stream Two until further notice.

The source quoted the Director-General as saying that the facilities no longer met the required standards after the inspection. The official was also said to have indicated that the state needed a completely new orientation camp.

The source added that the NYSC was seeking intervention from the Cross River State Government to address the condition of the facility and improve its capacity to accommodate corps members.

Findings cited in the report indicate that the deteriorating state of the camp has already affected the number of corps members it can accommodate. The facility previously hosted about 2,500 corps members per stream but now accommodates slightly more than 1,000.

More than 700 corps members are also reportedly processing relocation to other states. However, the NYSC had not been quoted as issuing a formal public announcement confirming the proposed suspension in the supplied report.
