The Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has called on the Federal Government to fully implement the consequential salary adjustments arising from the N70,000 national minimum wage and settle outstanding payments owed to federal workers.
The forum, in a statement jointly signed by its National Coordinator, Andrew Emelieze, and General Secretary, Ogundele Ayodele, on Wednesday in Abuja, also demanded payment of arrears, outstanding allowances and other financial entitlements linked to the revised wage structure.
The FWF alleged that although the N70,000 minimum wage took effect in 2024, its full consequential adjustment had not been implemented across the federal public service.
According to the workers’ group, only N40,000 was added uniformly to salaries across different levels, while the full adjustment expected to reflect the new minimum wage remained unresolved.
The forum said the situation had further weakened workers’ purchasing power amid rising costs of food, transportation, accommodation and other essential services. It argued that federal workers had continued to push for the full implementation of the wage adjustment since the new minimum wage took effect in July 2024.
The FWF specifically urged the government to implement the outstanding 40 per cent peculiar allowance and pay all arrears arising from the new wage structure. It also called for the settlement of promotion arrears and other outstanding financial obligations owed to workers.
“Workers should not continue to bear the burden of delayed implementation,” the forum said, insisting that the government should urgently resolve all outstanding issues connected with the new minimum wage.
Beyond the outstanding adjustments, the workers’ group called for a broader review of salaries, arguing that prevailing economic conditions had made existing pay levels inadequate for federal workers. It said improved remuneration was necessary to address the rising cost of living and strengthen welfare, productivity and efficiency in the public service.
The demand comes against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s decision in September 2024 to inaugurate a committee to negotiate consequential salary adjustments arising from the National Minimum Wage Act, 2024. The FWF is now urging the government to move from the adjustment process to full implementation and payment of outstanding obligations.
