The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State has declared that it is fully prepared for the September 26, 2026 local government election, setting its sights on retaining all 27 chairmanship and 305 councillorship positions across the state.
The declaration came after the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) formally confirmed September 26 as the date for elections into the state’s 27 Local Government Areas and 305 wards.
ISIEC Chairman, Hon. Charles Ejiogu, made the confirmation in a press release dated September 11, 2026, stating that voting would take place across 4,758 polling units in Imo State. The commission asked all registered political parties and other stakeholders to take note of the date and make the necessary preparations.
The commission also referred to its September 18, 2025 “360 days” Notice of Election, issued under Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended. ISIEC said consultations with critical stakeholders were still ongoing ahead of the election.
Responding to the announcement, the Imo APC said it had not waited for the latest confirmation before beginning its preparations. In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Onwuasoanya FCC Jones, PhD, the party said preparations had started following ISIEC’s initial notice about a year ago.
The APC said it had put logistics in place to field what it described as credible and popular candidates across the state. The party is seeking to reproduce its performance in the previous local government election by retaining all 27 chairmanship and 305 councillorship seats.
The coming election will therefore put the APC’s grassroots strength to another test while giving opposition parties an opportunity to challenge its dominance across Imo’s 27 LGAs. With September 26 approaching, candidate selection, campaign mobilisation and the ability of each party to organise at ward and local government level are expected to shape the contest.
