The convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi was reportedly blocked by suspected thugs while he was attempting to enter Benue State.
The incident allegedly occurred on Gboko Road shortly after Obi and his team arrived in Benue and travelled from the airport towards the town.
Videos shared on Tuesday by Esther Umoh, Obi’s photographer, showed a group of people carrying sticks blocking the road as the convoy attempted to pass through.
The footage also appeared to show some members of the group pursuing the convoy as it tried to make its way into the state.
Umoh said the road was the only route connecting the airport to the town and claimed the group was preventing Obi from meeting people he had planned to see.
“This is Gboko Road; the entire road is blocked. We just touched down, and this is the only road from the airport into town,” she said.
She condemned the incident and called for political disagreements to be handled without resorting to intimidation or violence.
“This is not acceptable. We should be able to do politics without going this low,” Umoh added.
The reported incident comes as political parties intensify campaigns, consultations and mobilisation across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
