Super Falcons Still Have World Cup Hope After WAFCON Exit, But Nigeria Must Beat South Africa

Nigeria’s Super Falcons may have lost their chance to qualify automatically for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, but their World Cup dream is still alive after their quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Falcons suffered a 1-0 loss to the Indomitable Lionesses on Sunday, ending their hopes of reaching the WAFCON semi-finals and securing one of Africa’s four automatic World Cup tickets.

Nigeria, however, still have a route to the tournament in Brazil. The Falcons will join South Africa, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire in the continental play-offs, where two teams will earn another opportunity to qualify for the global play-off tournament.

The immediate task for Nigeria is a crucial meeting with South Africa on Thursday. Victory against Banyana Banyana would secure one of the two available continental play-off places and keep the Falcons’ World Cup campaign alive.

The two teams that emerge from Africa’s play-offs will then face teams from other confederations in the global play-off tournament. FIFA says the first phase is scheduled for November and December 2026 at a centralised venue, involving six teams from Africa, Asia, South America and Oceania.

Two teams will advance from that stage to a final play-off phase scheduled for February 2027. They will then be joined by teams from CONCACAF, CONMEBOL and UEFA, with three final World Cup places at stake.

That means Nigeria now have a much narrower path to Brazil. The Falcons must first defeat South Africa before successfully navigating the subsequent global play-offs if they are to extend their remarkable record of appearing at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.

The defeat to Cameroon was therefore not the end of Nigeria’s World Cup campaign, but it removed their margin for error. With the next opportunity arriving against South Africa, the Falcons must quickly recover from their WAFCON disappointment and produce a victory.

Nigeria reached the last 16 of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where they were eliminated by eventual finalists England on penalties. The team will now be determined to avoid missing the 2027 tournament altogether.
