NERC: DisCos Leave ₦83.15bn Electricity Unbilled, Fail To Collect ₦45.26bn In July

Nigeria’s 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) left electricity worth ₦83.15 billion unbilled in July 2026 and failed to collect another ₦45.26 billion from customers they had already billed, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The figures were contained in NERC’s July 2026 Commercial Performance of Distribution Companies factsheet, released on Thursday. The report showed that the DisCos received electricity valued at ₦333.94 billion but billed customers for only ₦250.79 billion, leaving a billing gap of ₦83.15 billion.

The sector recorded a billing efficiency of 75.1 per cent during the month, indicating that the companies billed customers for about three-quarters of the electricity supplied to them.

The report also showed that the DisCos collected ₦205.53 billion out of the ₦250.79 billion billed, leaving ₦45.26 billion outstanding. Their overall collection efficiency stood at 81.95 per cent.

NERC’s figures highlighted differences in collection performance among the distribution companies. Abuja DisCo recorded the largest collection gap at ₦8.34 billion, having collected ₦35.62 billion from ₦43.96 billion billed.

Kano DisCo followed with a collection gap of ₦7.4 billion, collecting ₦8.26 billion against bills worth ₦15.66 billion. Kaduna DisCo collected ₦5.22 billion from ₦10.46 billion billed, leaving ₦5.24 billion outstanding.

Jos DisCo recorded a collection gap of ₦5.07 billion, collecting ₦5.65 billion out of ₦10.72 billion billed. Enugu DisCo, meanwhile, collected ₦16.38 billion from ₦21.38 billion billed, leaving ₦5 billion uncollected.

The figures distinguish between electricity that was supplied but not billed and bills that were issued but not paid. Together, they highlight the commercial challenges facing electricity distribution companies in Nigeria.
