Nigeria’s D’Tigress players have received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each from the Federal Government as part of the Presidential Reward for their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
Officials of the team also received the naira equivalent of $50,000 each, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) confirming that the payments were made on September 9, 2026.
The commission said the players and officials had confirmed receipt of the funds, completing the cash component of the reward promised by President Bola Tinubu after D’Tigress secured a record fifth consecutive Afrobasket title and seventh overall in 2025.
The cash payment is part of a wider reward package that includes three-bedroom flats in Abuja and national honours of the Order of the Niger (OON) for members of the team.
According to the NSC, the players and officials received the title documents for their Abuja apartments and certificates of national honours in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France. The documents were signed by President Tinubu.
The NSC said the cash component was processed following the team’s participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany, bringing the full Presidential Reward for D’Tigress members to completion.
The commission also disclosed that the Super Falcons, who were promised a similar reward package, have received the title documents for their three-bedroom apartments and certificates of national honours. Their cash component is expected to be paid before their next official engagements.
Under the same arrangement, each Super Falcons player is entitled to the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official is to receive $50,000.
The NSC said the rewards reflect the Federal Government’s stated commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian athletes and recognising outstanding performances on the international stage.
