Academic activities at Abia State University, Uturu, may face disruption after the university’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared an indefinite strike.
The union announced the industrial action in a notice issued to academic staff on Tuesday, citing the implementation of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government as one of the major issues behind the decision.
The notice was signed by the branch Chairperson, Chidi Mba, and Secretary, Victor Obisike. The union directed all academic staff to immediately withdraw their services and comply fully with the strike directive.
As part of the action, ASUU members were instructed to suspend participation in statutory activities of the university. These include Senate meetings, Faculty Board meetings and other official meetings connected to the institution.
The branch leadership also called on members to remain united and participate collectively in the struggle to secure the union’s demands. It urged academic staff to follow the directives issued by the branch during the industrial action.
The declaration comes against the backdrop of continuing disagreements between ASUU and the Federal Government over the implementation of agreements reached with the university lecturers’ union.
For students at Abia State University, the strike could affect lectures, examinations, administrative academic processes and other activities involving teaching staff if the action continues.
The union said it would communicate further developments to members as the situation unfolds. No end date was given for the strike, making its duration dependent on progress towards resolving the issues raised by the branch.
