The Lagos State Government has sealed a property in Ikoyi over allegations that it discharged untreated sewage into a canal, creating environmental and public health concerns in the area.

The affected property, located at No. 5, Manuwa Street, Ikoyi, was sealed on Wednesday by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office following complaints from residents and an investigation that confirmed alleged violations of wastewater management regulations.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement action in a statement shared on his official X handle, saying the property was shut over the “deliberate and continuous discharge of untreated sewage into the canal via a non-functional and moribund sewage treatment plant.”

Wahab said the premises were also found to be in an unhealthy condition, resulting in unpleasant odours, environmental pollution and possible risks to public health.

The commissioner explained that the action followed reports from concerned residents and subsequent inspections by relevant government officials, which established the alleged environmental breaches.

He urged property owners across Lagos to ensure proper wastewater disposal and comply with approved environmental standards to prevent pollution and protect public health.

Wahab warned that individuals and organisations found violating environmental laws would face sanctions and possible legal action in line with existing state regulations.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing environmental policies and maintaining a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for residents.
