Police Probe Borno Commissioner, FCT Council Chairman, Osun Senator Over Alleged Inciting Comments

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced investigations into alleged inciting comments made by Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Sainna Buba, Kuje Area Council Chairman in the Federal Capital Territory, Danjuma Shekwolo, and Osun East Senator Francis Fadahunsi.

Force spokesperson Ani Iniedu disclosed this on Tuesday during a joint security spokespersons briefing in Abuja, saying the police were investigating statements made by the three political actors, particularly comments relating to the electoral process.

Iniedu said inciting members of the public, especially through statements capable of influencing or disrupting the electoral process, constitutes a criminal offence. He stressed that the police would continue to enforce the law regardless of the political status of those involved.

“The law is very clear when it comes to inciting. It is criminal to incite members of the public, especially as you comment on the electoral process,” Iniedu said.

The police spokesperson also confirmed that Fadahunsi had been questioned over an alleged threat against members of the Accord during the controversy surrounding the August 15 Osun governorship election. He said he was part of the team that questioned the senator and that investigations into the matter remained ongoing.

Buba is being investigated over comments in which he warned critics of the Borno State Government against continuing their opposition to the administration of Governor Babagana Zulum. In a viral video, the commissioner was heard making threatening remarks towards critics and urging residents to support the state administration.

Shekwolo, meanwhile, came under scrutiny following comments in which he reportedly warned residents of Kuje Area Council to either support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections or leave the council. The remarks have drawn attention amid heightened political activity ahead of the next general election.

Iniedu said the investigations into the three cases would be concluded in accordance with the law and that the outcomes would be made public. He also urged politicians and other political stakeholders to avoid statements capable of inflaming tensions or inciting members of the public, particularly as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
