FIFA has launched a disciplinary investigation into the chaotic scenes that erupted after Spain’s World Cup final victory over Argentina, with several Argentine players now facing possible suspensions.
The governing body announced that it has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to examine alleged breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code following Sunday’s heated post-match confrontation.
The final whistle was followed by ugly scenes as players and officials from both teams became involved in a mass altercation on the pitch. Argentina defender Nahuel Molina was seen appearing to strike Spain captain Rodri in the stomach as celebrations began.
Another flashpoint occurred near the halfway line, where Leandro Paredes allegedly grabbed Spain defender Eric García by the throat before throwing midfielder Gavi to the ground during the melee.
Paredes was shown a red card after the match by referee Slavko Vinčić, who had already sent off Enzo Fernández late in normal time. Three other Argentina players, along with head coach Lionel Scaloni, were also booked during the highly charged encounter.
In a statement, FIFA confirmed that the incidents are now under formal review.
“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code with regard to the post-match incidents.”
In addition to the World Cup final confrontation, FIFA is also investigating Argentina’s conduct after their semi-final victory over England.
The investigation relates to reports that Argentina players celebrated with a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”, which was allegedly smuggled into Atlanta Stadium by supporters.
FIFA regulations prohibit players and teams from making political statements during official competitions. If the investigation finds that the rules were breached, those involved could face additional disciplinary sanctions, including match bans.
The outcome of the investigation will determine whether Argentina’s players or officials receive suspensions or other penalties under the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
