The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the death of Inspector Dr Ikechukwu Obodo, who was killed in a fatal hit-and-run accident, while dismissing reports that the incident involved a police convoy.
The late officer, a holder of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Nkpologu in Enugu State, was attached to the Operations Department at the Enugu State Police Command Headquarters before his death.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the clarification became necessary following the circulation of social media reports alleging that the senior police officer was crushed by a police convoy.
Ndukwe stated that there was currently no evidence linking any police convoy to the fatal motor-pedestrian accident. He added that investigations were ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Losing a police officer or any other person in such circumstances is deeply disheartening and must be thoroughly investigated,” Ndukwe said. “However, there is no evidence establishing that a police convoy was involved in the fatal hit-and-run motor-pedestrian accident at this time.”
Although the police did not disclose the exact location or time of the accident, the Command assured the public that additional information would be made available as the investigation progresses.
Police have also launched a manhunt for the driver involved in the hit-and-run, who reportedly fled the scene after the collision. Authorities say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspect.
Meanwhile, the remains of Inspector Obodo have been deposited in a mortuary as investigations continue. The Enugu State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a thorough and transparent investigation into the tragedy.
