The Imo State Police Command has identified and detained six officers captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a young man in Ikeduru Local Government Area, with disciplinary proceedings already underway.
The officers were identified after a video circulated widely on social media, sparking outrage and renewed concerns over police conduct and the treatment of citizens by security personnel.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, said the incident occurred on June 22, 2026, at Nduhobokwe, Uzoagba, in Ikeduru Local Government Area and was brought to the command’s attention through social media reports.
The footage, shared online by X user @ChidiebubeMedia, showed armed uniformed officers allegedly taking turns to flog two men on an untarred road. The video quickly attracted widespread condemnation and calls for accountability.
Following a preliminary review, the police command identified the officers involved as Inspector Ugochukwu Ibe, Inspector Nwachi Chimezie, Sergeant Ugoezuhu Austin, Corporal Michael Obi, Corporal Ebuka Onwuegbu, and Corporal Amos Sunny.
According to the statement, Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Following a prompt review of the incident, the six officers involved have been identified as operatives of the Command,” the statement noted.
The police confirmed that the officers have been taken into custody pending the outcome of the investigation, while disciplinary procedures have commenced in line with the regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
The command stressed that the conduct displayed in the viral video does not represent the values and professional standards expected of police personnel.
“The actions of the officers, as seen in the video, are inconsistent with the values, ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement added.
Authorities assured members of the public that the investigation would be conducted transparently and according to established procedures. The command also pledged to make the outcome of both the investigation and disciplinary process public once concluded.
The incident has reignited conversations about police accountability, human rights, and the need for continued reforms within Nigeria’s law enforcement system.
