Nigerian Army troops have rescued 23 passengers abducted by suspected kidnappers following a deadly attack along the Ayegunle–Bunu Road in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 3:30 a.m. on Monday, when heavily armed attackers blocked the highway and ambushed travellers, creating panic among motorists and passengers using the route.
Security sources disclosed that the gunmen abducted several passengers before troops from the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Kabba, responded swiftly after receiving a distress call from the area.
Although the attackers had fled before the arrival of security operatives, soldiers discovered a grim scene at the location. Two people were found dead, while five others sustained injuries during the attack.
Military personnel also recovered two Toyota commercial buses and a HOWO truck that had been abandoned by the roadside during the chaos.
According to a security source, troops immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation after assessing the situation, leading to the successful rescue of 23 abducted passengers from the kidnappers.
“The troops immediately launched a pursuit operation leading to the rescue of 23 abducted passengers,” the source said.
The rescued victims were evacuated to a secure location, while those injured in the attack were taken to St. Joseph Hospital, Kabba, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Military authorities said efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing kidnappers and rescue any victims who may still be in captivity. Security operations, including surveillance and clearance patrols, have also been intensified across the area to prevent further attacks.
The Ayegunle–Bunu corridor has witnessed a series of kidnapping and banditry incidents in recent months, raising concerns among residents and road users. The latest operation forms part of broader efforts by security agencies to restore confidence and improve safety along major routes in Kogi State.
