Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has donated N10 million to support healthcare services and ongoing renovation work at Ehime General Hospital in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

The donation was announced during Obi’s visit to the hospital, where he was welcomed by the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. David Onuoha, members of the clergy, and the hospital’s management team.

The visit comes as the hospital undergoes extensive renovation following its handover to the Catholic Diocese for management. Stakeholders are also pursuing plans to establish a nursing school within the hospital complex to strengthen healthcare training and improve service delivery across the area.

Archbishop Onuoha praised Obi for his continued commitment to supporting critical sectors, particularly healthcare and education. He described the former Anambra State governor’s interventions as impactful and beneficial to communities in need of improved public services.

Speaking during the visit, Obi emphasized that healthcare and education remain fundamental to national development. He noted that no society can achieve sustainable economic growth without investing in the wellbeing and education of its citizens.

According to him, governments at all levels must increase support for healthcare initiatives while encouraging partnerships with private individuals and faith-based organizations. He said religious institutions have continued to complement government efforts by providing essential services in underserved communities.

Obi also stressed the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructure and human capital development, arguing that improved facilities and well-trained professionals are key to achieving better healthcare outcomes across the country.

The proposed nursing school, which is expected to be developed within the hospital premises, is seen as a major step toward producing skilled healthcare professionals while expanding access to quality medical training in Imo State.

The donation is expected to boost the ongoing renovation of Ehime General Hospital and strengthen its capacity to provide quality healthcare services to residents of Ehime Mbano and neighboring communities. It also highlights growing collaboration between private individuals, religious institutions, and healthcare stakeholders in improving medical services across the state.
